It is a requirement of the Public Carriage Office that a PCO licensed driver must only use a PCO licensed vehicle for the purpose of their trade. Therefore if for any reason you are not able to use your own vehicle, perhaps during routine or unexpected repair or after an accident, you must arrange for a replacement PCO licensed vehicle if you wish to continue to work. It is not acceptable to hire just any vehicle, not even if it is brand new.

The extract below from a Transport For London document, shows that you must also use a PCO licensed vehicle when carrying out contract work, as it was a misconception that contract clients were exempt from the PCO requirements.

"During the course of licensing London’s private hire trade, it became apparent that some sections of the trade were avoiding licensing on the basis that their services were not being made available to the public; rather they were being used for contract work.
Section 54 of the Road Safety Act 2006 has now removed the term “to the public” from the 1998 Act. The effect of this amendment will be to make it irrelevant whether a vehicle is provided solely for contract work or to the public at large. Any vehicle that seats fewer than nine passengers and is made available with a driver for hire for the purpose of carrying passengers now falls within the meaning of the 1998 Act and those that have previously claimed exemption will be required to be licensed."

Insurance Companies and Replacement PCO vehicles.

We are also able to hire directly to insurance companies. If you were unfortunate enough to have been involved in an accident, ask your insurance company to contact us to arrange your replacement vehicle. We are often more competative than others in this field, which makes securing a replacement vehicle through your insurers much easier.

PCO Car Delivery

We are able to deliver your vehicle direct to your address or place of work. Should you prefer to collect the vehicle from us and avoid the deliver fee - our prefered method - then this is also possible.

Your Documents

We will require a copy of your PCO licence and if you wish to insure the vehicle yourself, a copy of your insurance documentation detailing our vehicle and the level of cover provided. If your vehicle is off road, your insurer will often allow a temporary substitution. As your own vehicle is not at risk due to being in a workshop somewhere, your insurance company can apply the cover to a different vehicle on a temporary basis. Please check with your own insurance company.
